About Lou Dondero

Founder, Special Legacy

Special Legacy started with one family. Mine.

My nephew Benjamin was a baby when the signs began. The delays in development that no one could explain. The confusion, the testing, the waiting. Then the seizures started, and with them came the hospital visits, the specialists, the sleepless nights. His mother, one of the strongest people I know, carried all of it as a single parent. The weight of caring for a child with autism while trying to understand what the future would look like was something I'll never forget watching.

Benjamin just entered first grade. He's thriving. Incredibly intelligent, social, and loves school more than any kid I've ever seen. His story is one of perseverance, and it changed the way I think about my work.

I've spent more than 15 years in financial services. I came up as an investment banker, then moved into life insurance and estate planning, partnering with financial advisors at Wells Fargo to help their high-net-worth clients with wealth transfer, retirement planning, and risk mitigation. I'm currently ranked in the top 5 out of 320 Life Insurance Partners nationally. That's a recognition I'm proud of, but it only matters because of what it represents: trust. Advisors and their clients trust me with the most important financial decisions their families will ever make.

But watching Benjamin's journey made me realize something. The families who need this kind of planning the most, families raising a child with special needs, are often the ones who have the hardest time finding it. They're overwhelmed. They're navigating IEPs and Medicaid and SSI and therapy appointments. The last thing on their mind is life insurance. And yet, it might be the single most important financial decision they ever make, because it's the one that ensures their child is cared for long after they're gone.

That's why I built Special Legacy. Not as an insurance company, but as an education-first consulting practice dedicated to helping families understand their options, see the full picture, and put a plan in place that gives them peace of mind. I work with families directly, and I work alongside the attorneys, financial advisors, and trust professionals who serve them. My goal is simple: no family should ever have to wonder, "What happens to my child when I'm no longer here?"

How I Work

If you've spent any time on this website, you've probably noticed something: there's no hard sell here. No pop-ups asking you to "get a quote in 60 seconds." That's intentional. The families I serve are dealing with enough pressure. What they need is clarity, not a pitch.

I start every conversation the same way, by listening. Every family's situation is different. The type of coverage that makes sense for a family with a child who has Down syndrome and qualifies for SSI is different from what works for a family navigating a progressive condition like muscular dystrophy. The trust structure matters. The state you live in matters. The benefits your child currently receives matter. I take the time to understand all of it before I ever recommend anything.

I also believe in working alongside your team, not replacing them. If you have an attorney drafting a special needs trust, I want to talk to that attorney. If you have a financial advisor managing your family's assets, I want to coordinate with them. The best outcomes happen when everyone is working from the same plan.

"Families don't need a sales pitch. They need someone who will sit with them, understand their situation, and help them build a plan that protects their child's future."
